KTA Boooks and More Talk: Commandment 613: A Sacred Craft with KT2 filmmaker Miriam Lewin

When

May 17, 2026
2:00 pm EDT - 3:30 pm EDT

Event Type

KT2 Miriam Lewin will present her short documentary Commandment 613, about a scribe who restores Torah scrolls saved in Czechoslovakia during the Shoah. These Torahs are now loaned by the Memorials Scrolls Trust in London to synagogues and communities all over the world.

We’ll watch the 23-minute film together, and then have a Q&A with Miriam and the scribe featured in the film, Rabbi Kevin Hale. As part of the conversation, Rabbi Hale will connect our topic to the upcoming holiday of Shavuot, which celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, and Miriam will talk about the Czech scrolls as “Decentralized Memorials.” Stolpersteine are the best-known example of this concept; are the many monuments to the Kindertransport another?
