Escaping the Darkness of Nazi Europe on the Kindertransport with Margot Lobree and Laurie Schaefer.
One suitcase. One train. One mother’s impossible choice. At thirteen, Margot Lobree stood on a crowded platform in Frankfort with a single suitcase. The Kindertransport would save her – but at a cost she wouldn’t fully understand until adulthood. In England, Margot learned about a new country and a new courage, moved through fear and air-raid sirens, found friendship and work, and grew up far from everyone she loved.
Decades later, she would become a beloved voice for students across North Carolina – the first Holocaust survivor in the state to Zoom into dozens of classrooms the day after turning ninety-nine – telling a story of separation, resilience, and the quiet scars of a stolen adolescence.
In The Light Between the Rails, through longconversations at Margot’s kitchen table, Laurie helps to bring Margot’s story to life.
Margot Lobree, who just turned 101 years old, is a Holocaust survivor, educator, and speaker whose life story reflects both profound loss and extraordinary resilience.
Laurie Schaefer is an educator, writer, and Holocaust education leader. She serves as Chair of the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust and Executive Director of Women of the Shoah.
Join Margot and Laurie as they share Margot’s story and how they came to write this book. Hosted by KT2 Margot Kelman.
