“Saved for a time: Kindertransports to Belgium 1938/39 ” March 13-26, 2025
Opening reception Wednesday, March 12, 2025, 6:30 p.m., in the representation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to the federal government, Hiroshimastraße 12-16, 10785 Berlin
KTA member, KT2 Susan Sanders, a descendant of one of the rescued children, will be speaking at the opening.
The representation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to the federal government, the embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Germany and the Jawne learning and memorial site in Cologne invite you to discover the almost unknown history of the Kindertransports to Belgium.
Around 1,000 Jewish children from Germany and Austria reached Belgium via Cologne in 1938 and 1939 with the help of Kindertransports – a temporary rescue from anti-Semitic persecution, as in May 1940 the German Wehrmacht marched into Belgium. The exhibition, prepared by the Jawne Learning and Memorial Site, focuses on the history of these Kindertransports and the girls and boys who were “temporarily” saved by them, using eleven biographies. The artist Ludwig Dunkel is presenting a new work on the occasion of the exhibition.
The exhibition is a contribution to commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with the Allied victory over Nazi Germany. It will be opened as part of a celebratory evening event on March 12.
