Terry, Czechoslovakia 1940

by Tom Berman

Together we were pups
Six legs between us

I remember you
Spoilt brat
Rolling on the floor
Screaming in a tantrum

Chases in the garden
Wrestling on the lawn
Over the hill
To our multi scented stream

We grew together
You and I
Whispering sweet secrets
Smells mingling in brotherhood

You had other friends
But none so close as me
Five years long

One day you were gone
Your scent lingered longer
Then no more.

One day
Grey uniforms
took me

I escaped home

To a scent
gone cold
and again,

the grey uniforms
