The Kindertransport – A Story of Hope

Posted on December 2, 2025

My mother, Marietta Sobel Drucker (z”l), was 9 ½ when her parents placed her on the Kindertransport to save her life after the Nazis invaded Vienna in 1938. She was taken from Austria to Great Britain on January 11, 1939. On that date, a lanyard was placed around her neck, which would help identify her when she arrived in England: Number 2352.

I serve on the board of the Kindertransport Association (KTA) and recently attended a board retreat at the Center for Jewish History, housed in the Union Square neighborhood in Manhattan. The KTA’s mission is to connect people who were directly involved in the Kindertransports and who have since immigrated to North America. It also aims to teach about the Kindertransport’s history as part of Holocaust education, while supporting and advocating for child refugees and children in need today.
