SUMMARY:The Kindertransport Journey Exhibit at the Sumter Museum
DESCRIPTION:Kindertransport Survivor Robert Sugar  created a series of exh
ibition panels that trace the Kindertransport children’s’ epic journey
from 1938 into the 21st century. Robert Sugar\, who fled Vienna aged six\
, spent the war years on the Millisle Refugee Settlement Farm in Northern
Ireland\, and felt that the daily life of this Jewish refugee farming comm
unity\, unique in Ireland\, should be recorded. At 14\, he began to make p
hotos of work in the fields\, the buildings they built\, the animals\, the
  scenery\, and the people.\n\nIn June 1989\, on the 50th anniversary of t
 he Kindertransports\, over a thousand people\, Kindertransport survivors a
nd their families\, gathered in London for a reunion. Many came from Brita
in\, where they had settled\; others came from many different countries to
which they had emigrated. Most knew a piece of the story\; but few knew t
he overall story of the Kindertransports\; a few\, rescued and adopted as
very young children\, did not know they had been part of a larger story. I
nspired by this gathering\, Robert\, a graphic designer\, set to work. Thi
s exhibit traces that larger story\, sharing both the history\, and detail
s of the lives of individual Kinder and their families. It is an effort to
retrieve the almost lost story of an almost lost generation.\n\nThe Kinde
rtransport Journey\, from Memory to History and the KTA Memory Quilt Repli
cas will be at the Sumter Museum in Sumter\, South Carolina April 17 - Jul
 y 26\, 2025\n\nKTA Board Member Jason Camis\, a KT3\, will speak at the Mu
seum Monday July 14\, 6pm. Jason's grandmother Ilse Camis was a Kindertran
 sport survivor.
