THE STORY OF THE SQUARE
Quilt 3, Square 12
Artist: Gerry Grossmann
My brother Werner (now Warren) and I Gerd (now Gerry) left Dusseldorf, Germany, end of May 1939 for England via Hook of Holland . We traveled to Leeds, where I stayed with a tailor and his family and my brother with a lawyer.
After a short while we were transferred to a refugee hostel. My brother went to San Francisco. I stayed in England and started to live on my own at age fourteen. A couple of aunts survived the war in the U.S.A. and one aunt in Germany. I left England in 1966 to settle in Canada.
The block represents the crossing of the German–Dutch border from Dusseldorf to the Hook van Holland on the way to England on the date shown. I was thirteen at the time.
