Kindertransport Memory Quilt Square

Quilt 2, Square 2

Artist: Hanus Grosz

This square is based on a drawing made by a child in the Terezin (Terezienstadt) ghetto-concentration camp.

Of the 15,000 or so children who passed through Terezin fewer than one hundred survived. Most of them were transported to the Auschwitz–Birkenau extermination camp where they were gassed.

Without the Kindertransport rescue operation, thousands more children would surely have perished.

Alena Synkova, a child in Terezin, left the following poem behind:

I’d like to go away alone
Where there are other, nicer people,
Somewhere into the far unknown,
There, where no one kills another.
